Brighton have announced the signing of new striker Georginio Rutter from Leeds United for £40m.

Brighton have decide to pay Rutter’s £40m release clause to sign him on a five-year deal until the summer of 2029, having previously had offers of £29m and £35m reject.

The 22-year-old French forward enjoyed a breakthrough season for Leeds United. Scoring seven goals and providing 15 assists in 47 appearances last season as they reached the play-off final, where they narrowly missed out on promotion after a 1-0 defeat to Southampton.  

Brighton head coach Fabian Herzeler welcomed the club’s seventh new signing of the summer. Saying: “Georginio is a player who has the ability to get fans off their seats and showed what he can do in English football with Leeds last season.

“Also, I’ve known him since he played ยูฟ่าเบท for Hoffenheim in Germany.”

David Weir, Brighton’s technical director, expressed the club’s long-standing interest in Rutter. “He’s a strong technical player and one we are excited to bring to the club. We look forward to seeing him continue to develop with us,” Weir said. The Seagulls believe Rutter has the ability to flourish under their system. With manager Fabian Hurzeler also keen on the forward’s potential impact.

  Rutter is available for immediate selection for Brighton’s next home game against Manchester United on Saturday, August 24. After Brighton made a fine start to their campaign by beating Everton 3-0 to move top of the table.
